Wen made the call at a symposium with some 100 students of the prestigious Tsinghua University, who have chosen to work in China's less-developed western regions or at the grassroots level after graduation.
Wen's Tsinghua tour marked his annual visit to university campuses since 2003 ahead of the Chinese Youth Day, which falls on Monday this year.
In more than one hour's time, Wen listened to the students' stories and gave his advices on their future development, encouraging them to "be resolute-minded, hard working and down-to-earth to achieve your goals."
Sui Shaochun, a mechanics students, said he had landed a job in an aeroplane manufacturing company in southwestern Sichuan Province and was ready to devote himself to the country's project of building its own big planes.

Wen said the future of a young person and that of the nation were interdependent, and "the young should bind their own destinies with that of the country."
Another graduate-to-be Cheng Li told Wen she would work in Wenchuan of Sichuan, the epicenter of last year's devastating May 12 earthquake, believing the reconstruction work would be "more meaningful than anything else."
Wen said the post-quake reconstruction requires a large number of professionals and he encouraged Cheng to play her role. "The love and devotion to the people is the most lofty part of human morals," said he.
Wen praised Zou Shenglan and Yan Weilong after learning they had volunteered to work in Tibetan villages.
He told them to be prepared for the hardship in rural areas. "I believe after being tempered at the grassroots level in Tibet, you'll become more mature," he said. "And when you look back at that part of experience in the future, you'll have no regret."
"I want you all to be well-educated people with moral integrity and work ability, and be of use to the people," Wen said before concluding the discussion, followed by having lunch with the students at their dinning hall.Chinese Youth Day & May Fourth Movement五四运动简介
Chinese Youth Day is a holiday for commemoration of May Fourth Movement which happened on May 4, 1919 in China. China had entered World War I on the side of the Allied Triple Entente in 1917 with the condition that all German spheres of influence, such as Shandong, would be returned to China, and the movement took place under the background after the war.
China as one of the Allied victories attended the Versailles Peace Conference held in Paris of France in January 1919. The representatives of the Chinese government put forth the following requests:
1.the abolition of all privileges of foreign powers in China, such as extraterritoriality
2.the cancelling of the "Twenty-One Demands" with the Japanese
3.the return to China of the territory and rights of Shandong, which Japan had taken from Germany during World War I.
However, all the requests were rejected by the conference. To make things worse, the Versailles Treaty of April 1919 awarded German rights in Shandong Province to Japan. Some unpatriotic Chinese politicians were prepared to accept the humiliating treaty.
On May 4, 1919, an increasing number of 3000 college students mainly from three universities in Beijing broke through the police cordon and gathered in front of Tian'anmen. They requested to punish several governmental traitors and raised such slogans as "Struggle for the sovereignty externally, get rid of the national traitors at home", "Do away with the 'Twenty-One Demands", "Don't sign the Versailles Treaty", "Boycott Japanese goods", "Rather be a piece of jade than a whole tile" and "Recover our sovereignty of Shandong".
The wrathful students burned the house of one of the traitors after the police and troops began to repress the movement with arrest of 32 students. Then, the patriotic movement spread to the whole country, Chinese worker and businessmen were joining in the protest after the arrest of May 4.
The May Fourth Movement was a thorough patriotic movement with uncompromisement against imperialism and feudalism in China. It promoted the Chinese historical process and spread Marxism throughout the nation.
The date of annual May 4 was set as a holiday of Chinese Youth Day in December 1949 by the Government Administration Council, dedicated to the youths of China.
