假设25只全部是鸡，那么总共有2×25=50只脚则，鸡脚就比兔脚多50-0=50只鸡每减少1只，兔子就增加1只。而它们之间脚的个数之差就减少2+4=6个已知鸡的脚比兔子的脚多20只所以，兔子的只数=(50-20)÷6=5只则，鸡的只数=25-5=20只.列式：兔子的只数=(2×25-20)÷(2+4)=5只；鸡的只数=25-5=20只.
